“There is no change in the doctrine of the Catholic Church regarding family and same Sex marriage ” confirmed Bishop Mar Joseph Pamplany, chairman of KCBC Media Commission. The Bishop was talking to Cnews about the documentary “Francesco”, directed by Evgeny Afineevsky, that claims the Holy Father Pope Francis as justifying same sex marriages. It is not customary for the Catholic church to announce, any changes to its doctrines through a documentary. The words quoted by Pope Francis is out of context and presented as against the Doctrines of the Catholic church. Such misinterpretations against the Church, which has become a norm in recent era, is quite visible here as well. Pope Francis has taught in several instances that anyone who identifies themselves as belonging to the “LGBTQ” are also Children of God and demands the same care, consideration and love as any other human person.

The same position was taken by The Congregation of Faith in its 1975 historic document on sexual morality. The Church has taught that we should distinguish between Homosexual orientation and Homosexual acts. The Church urges that the society has got the responsibility to bring them to the mainstream, those who have been same sex-oriented due to various reasons. The news in various media that Pope Francis has asked to legalize same sex marriage is wrong and misleading. Bishop also said that an official statement from the Vatican on the context of this misinterpretation is soon awaited.

“Live-in relationships” of same sex-oriented persons are not considered as “Marriage” by the Catholic Church. However, many countries have accepted such unions under their Civil Laws. The pastoral care of such persons living in Civil Union is a matter of grave importance to the Catholic Church. The Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, “AMORIS LAETITIA” which was released after the Synod on Family, talks extensively about such issues. “This observation on Pastoral care made by Pope Francis is mispresented through this news” observed Bishop Pamplany.
