ഹാഗിയ സോഫിയ കത്തീഡ്രല്‍: ദുഃഖമറിയിച്ച് ഇന്‍റര്‍ ചര്‍ച്ച് കൗണ്‍സില്‍
കാക്കനാട്: ഐക്യത്തിന്‍റെയും മതസൗഹാര്‍ദ്ദത്തിന്‍റെയും അടയാളവും ക്രൈസ്തവരുടെ പവിത്രമായ ആരാധനാലയവുമായിരുന്ന ഹാഗിയ സോഫിയ കത്തീഡ്രല്‍ ഒരു മോസ്ക് ആക്കി മാറ്റാനുള്ള തുര്‍ക്കി പ്രസിഡണ്ടിന്‍റെ തീരുമാനത്തില്‍ കേരള ഇന്‍റര്‍ ചര്‍ച്ച് കൗണ്‍സില്‍ അതീവ ദുഃഖവും ഉത്കണ്ഠയും രേഖപ്പെടുത്തി. ആറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടില്‍ ബൈസന്‍റൈന്‍ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രതാപകാലത്ത് പണിതുയര്‍ത്തിയ ഹാഗിയ സോഫിയ ക്രൈസ്തവ ലോകത്തിന്‍റെ വിശുദ്ധമായ പാരമ്പര്യത്തിന്‍റെ പ്രതീകവും അനേകം നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളില്‍ ക്രൈസ്തവവിശ്വാസികളുടെ ഒരു പ്രധാന തീര്‍ത്ഥാടന കേന്ദ്രവുമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് യുനെസ്കോ ഇതിനെ ഒരു ലോക പൈതൃക സ്മാരകമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിരുന്നു.

Kerala Inter Church Council expresses regret
over converting Hagia Sophia Cathedral
Kakkanad: The Inter-Church Council of Kerala expressed its deep sorrow and dismay at the decision of the President of Turkey converting the Hagia Sophia Cathedral, a sacred shrine of Christianity and an icon of unity and inter-religious harmony into a mosque. Hagia Sophia with its historical roots going back into the sixth century A.D. built during the time of the Byzantine Empire carries the hallowed tradition of Christianity and was a centre of pilgrimage down through many centuries. It was declared, later, by the UNESCO as a part of the world heritage site.
The Heads of the Christian Churches in Kerala joined with the feelings expressed Pope Francis in his July 12th address at St. Peter’s square on the Hagia Sophia, the sentiments of sorrow expressed by Patriarch Bartholomew I, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, the dismay expressed by Patriarch Kirill, the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, the spirit of the letter of the World Council of Churches to the President of Turkey and the statements of the leaders of various Christian Churches all over the world in demanding the President of Turkey to revoke his unfortunate decision.
