Kakkanad: For the first time in the history of the Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Church, the Synod of Bishops is convened online from today.

The Synod of the Bishops of the Church is conducted in the electronic platform in the context of the Covid-19 protocol, as the Bishops of the Church who are in different States of India and abroad cannot come together to conduct the Synod at Mount St. Thomas Kakkanad, as it used to be. It is the Second Session of the twenty eighth Synod of the Church that goes online today.

The Congregation for the Eastern Churches in Rome has already given norms and directives on conducting Bishops’ Synod using electronic platform in the context of the existing restrictions of Covid-19 pandemic. The Online Synod of the Syro-Malabar bishops necessarily follows the guidelines enumerated in the Vatican document.

The virtual Synod will last for three days from today. Every day, a session of two hours in the evenings is scheduled, taking into account the time zones of different countries from which the bishops take part in the online Synod. Preparations for the conducting of the online Synod are complete, according to the press release from the Major Archiepiscopal Curia of the Syro-Malabar Church at Mount St. Thomas Kakkanad.
