April 14th is considered the first day of the zodiac calendar in many cultures and faiths. Dr. Ambedkar, the Architect of the Indian constitution was born on this day as well as many other good people . It is celebrated as ‘Vishu’, the festival of new beginnings in Kerala.

This is also the New Year’s Day in Tamilnadu, Tulunadu (South West Karnataka), Assam, Bengal, Orissa, Punjab, Nepal, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Srilanka, Maldives, Laos, etc. Vaisakhi, Baisakhi, Pohela Boishakh, Puthandu, Bohag Bihu, Mesha Sankranti, Pana Sankranti, and many other festivals are also commemorated on this day. The traditional Hindu, Sikh, and Buddhist solar calendars, known as ‘Panchang’ consider this as the new year’s day. Even though many of these civilizations are quite distinct, we could see an underlying unity among all traditions on this day.
