സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ പേര് “കേരളം” — ഭരണഘടനയിൽ അംഗീകാരം ലഭിക്കേണ്ട സമയം

മലയാളികൾക്ക് അത് കേരളം ആണ്.
ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഭരണഘടനയിൽ നമ്മുടെ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ പേര് ഇപ്പോഴും “Kerala” എന്ന ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് രൂപത്തിലാണ് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ഈ ഭൂമിയുടെ ഭാഷയും ചരിത്രവും സംസ്കാരവും അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന ഓരോ മലയാളിക്കും ഈ നാട് എന്നും “കേരളം” തന്നെയാണ്. വീടുകളിലും വിദ്യാലയങ്ങളിലും ആരാധനാലയങ്ങളിലും സാഹിത്യത്തിലും ഗാനങ്ങളിലും — എല്ലായിടത്തും ജീവിക്കുന്നത് “കേരളം” എന്ന പേരാണ്.
ഇത് ഒരു വിവർത്തന പ്രശ്നമല്ല;
ഇത് ഒരു സ്വത്വത്തിന്റെ പ്രശ്നമാണ്.
ഭാഷയും സ്വാഭിമാനവും
സ്വന്തം ഭാഷയിൽ സ്വന്തം നാട്ടിനെ വിളിക്കാൻ കഴിയുക എന്നത് ഒരു ജനതയുടെ അടിസ്ഥാന അവകാശമാണ്.
തമിഴ്നാട്, കര്ണാടക, ഒഡിഷ തുടങ്ങിയ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ അവരുടെ ഭാഷാപരമായ രൂപത്തിൽ ഔദ്യോഗിക അംഗീകാരം നേടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതുപോലെ തന്നെ, മലയാളത്തിന്റെ നാട്ടിന് “കേരളം” എന്ന പേരാണ് യഥാർത്ഥ രൂപം.
“Kerala” ഒരു ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് രൂപം മാത്രം;
“കേരളം” ചരിത്രവും സംസ്കാരവും പാരമ്പര്യവും ചേർന്ന ആത്മാവാണ്.
ഭാഷ ആശയവിനിമയം മാത്രമല്ല — അത് ഒരു ജനതയുടെ സ്മൃതിയാണ്.
പേര് മാറ്റം ഒരു ഔപചാരിക നടപടി മാത്രമല്ല — അത് ആത്മാഭിമാനത്തിന്റെ പ്രഖ്യാപനമാണ്.
ചരിത്രവും പൈതൃകവും
സംഗംകാല സാഹിത്യങ്ങളിലും പ്രാചീന രേഖകളിലും യാത്രക്കാരുടെ വിവരണങ്ങളിലും ഈ ഭൂമി “കേരളം” എന്ന ആശയത്തിലാണ് നിലകൊണ്ടത്.
ചേരരാജവംശ പൈതൃകം, മലയാള ഭാഷയുടെ വളർച്ച, സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകത — എല്ലാം ഈ പേരുമായി ചേർന്നതാണ്.
അതുകൊണ്ട് ഭരണഘടനയിൽ “Kerala” എന്ന രൂപം നിലനിൽക്കുന്നത് ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ പൂർണ്ണ പ്രതിഫലനം അല്ല. ജനതയുടെ സ്വത്വത്തെ പ്രതിഫലിപ്പിക്കുന്ന യഥാർത്ഥ പേര് അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെടണം.
ജനാധിപത്യ പിന്തുണ
കേരള നിയമസഭ ഇതിനകം തന്നെ ഒറ്റകെട്ടായി ഒരു പ്രമേയം പാസാക്കി, സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക പേര് “കേരളം” (Keralam) എന്നായി അംഗീകരിക്കണമെന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ട് കേന്ദ്ര സർക്കാരിനോട് അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
അതുകൊണ്ട് ഇത് ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ അഭ്യർത്ഥന മാത്രമല്ല — ജനങ്ങൾ തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത പ്രതിനിധികളുടെ ഏകകണ്ഠമായ അഭിപ്രായമാണ്. ജനങ്ങളും അവരുടെ നിയമസഭയും ഒരേ ശബ്ദത്തിലാണ് ഈ ആവശ്യം ഉന്നയിക്കുന്നത്.
ദേശീയ ഐക്യത്തിനുള്ള മാതൃക
ഒരു സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന് സ്വന്തം ഭാഷാപരമായ പേര് നൽകുന്നത് വിഭജനമല്ല —
അത് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വൈവിധ്യത്തെ ബഹുമാനിക്കുന്നതാണ്.
ഭാരതം ഭാഷകളുടെ സംഗമമാണ്.
വൈവിധ്യത്തെ അംഗീകരിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് ഐക്യം ശക്തമാകുന്നത്.
“കേരളം” എന്ന പേര് ഭരണഘടനയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത് മലയാളികളുടെ വികാരത്തെ മാനിക്കുന്നതോടൊപ്പം രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ഫെഡറൽ ആത്മാവിനും ബഹുമാനം നൽകുന്നതായിരിക്കും.
കവി വള്ളത്തോൾ പാടിയിട്ടുണ്ട് —
“കേരളം എന്ന് കേട്ടാൽ തിളക്കണം ചോരയിൽ…
ഭാരതം എന്ന് കേട്ടാൽ അഭിമാനപൂരിതമാകണം അന്തരംഗം…”
സ്വദേശസ്നേഹവും ദേശീയ അഭിമാനവും പരസ്പരം വിരുദ്ധങ്ങളല്ല; ഒന്നിനെ മറ്റൊന്ന് ശക്തിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതാണ്. സ്വന്തം നാടിന്റെ പേരിനെ സ്വന്തം ഭാഷയിൽ വിളിക്കാനുള്ള ആഗ്രഹം ദേശസ്നേഹത്തെ കുറയ്ക്കുന്നില്ല — മറിച്ച് അത് കൂടുതൽ ആഴപ്പെടുത്തുന്നു.
അപ്പോൾ ഒരു സ്വാഭാവിക ചോദ്യം ഉയരും —
എന്തുകൊണ്ട് ഇത്ര നാൾ വൈകി?
“കേരളം” എന്ന പേര് ആവശ്യപ്പെടുന്നത് ആരുടെയും ഔദാര്യം തേടുന്നതല്ല.
ഇത് ഒരു പ്രത്യേക അനുകമ്പയല്ല, ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രീയ ഇളവും അല്ല.
ഇത് മലയാളികളുടെ ന്യായമായ അവകാശം മാത്രമാണ്.
സമയം എത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു
ഇത് ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രീയ ആവശ്യമല്ല,
ഒരു ജനതയുടെ ആത്മാവിന്റെ അഭ്യർത്ഥനയാണ്.
കേന്ദ്ര സർക്കാർ ഭരണഘടന ഭേദഗതി ചെയ്ത് സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക പേര് “കേരളം” എന്നാക്കി മാറ്റാൻ അടിയന്തര നടപടി സ്വീകരിക്കണം.
ഭാഷയ്ക്ക് ബഹുമാനവും ചരിത്രത്തിന് അംഗീകാരവും നൽകുന്ന നീതിപൂർണ്ണ തീരുമാനം അതായിരിക്കും.
ഒരു ജനത തന്റെ നാട്ടിനെ സ്വന്തം ഭാഷയിൽ വിളിക്കാൻ ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നു —
അത് അനുവദിക്കപ്പെടണം.
പേര് മാറ്റം ഒരു അക്ഷരത്തിന്റെ മാറ്റമല്ല — ഒരു ജനതയുടെ മാനത്തിന്റെ അംഗീകാരം ആണ്.
ഈ ആവശ്യം ഉന്നയിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഞാൻ നമ്മുടെ രാഷ്ട്രപതിക്കും പ്രധാനമന്ത്രിക്കും നിവേദനം നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
മലയാളികളുടെ ഈ ന്യായമായ അഭ്യർത്ഥന എത്രയും വേഗം പരിഗണിക്കപ്പെടുമെന്ന് പ്രത്യാശിക്കുന്നു.

A country has a name that calls its soul.
For Malayalis, it is Kerala.
The name of our state is still recorded in the English form “Kerala” in the Constitution of India. But for every Malayali who experiences the language, history and culture of this land, this land is still “Kerala”. In homes, schools, places of worship, literature and songs — the name “Kerala” lives everywhere.
This is not a translation issue;
This is an identity issue.
Language and self-respect
It is the fundamental right of a people to be able to call their own country in their own language.
States like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Odisha have received official recognition in their linguistic form. Similarly, the name of the Malayalam language is “Kerala” in its original form.
“Kerala” is just an English form;
“Kerala” is the soul that combines history, culture and tradition.
Language is not just communication — it is the memory of a people.
A name change is not just a formality — it is a declaration of self-respect.
History and Heritage
In Sangam literature, ancient documents, and travelers’ accounts, this land has stood under the concept of “Kerala”.
The legacy of the Chera dynasty, the growth of the Malayalam language, and the uniqueness of its culture — all are intertwined with this name.
Therefore, the existence of the form “Kerala” in the Constitution is not a complete reflection of history. The true name that reflects the identity of the people should be accepted.
Democratic Support
The Kerala Assembly has already unanimously passed a resolution requesting the Central Government to accept the official name of the state as “Keralam”.
Therefore, this is not just a request of an individual — it is the unanimous opinion of the elected representatives of the people. The people and their Assembly are raising this demand with one voice.
A model for national unity
Giving a state its own linguistic name is not division —
it respects India’s diversity.
India is a confluence of languages.
Unity is strengthened when diversity is accepted.
Including the name “Kerala” in the Constitution will not only respect the sentiments of the Malayalis but also respect the federal spirit of the country.
The poet Vallathol has sung —
“When you hear Kerala, your blood should boil…
When you hear Bharat, your heart should be filled with pride…”
Patriotism and national pride are not opposites; they reinforce each other. The desire to call one’s country by its own language does not diminish patriotism — on the contrary, it deepens it.
Then a natural question arises —
Why so long?
The demand for the name “Kerala” is not seeking anyone’s generosity.
This is not a special sympathy, nor a political concession.
This is only the legitimate right of the Malayalis.
The time has come
This is not a political demand,
It is the request of the soul of a nation.
The central government should take immediate action to amend the constitution and change the official name of the state to “Kerala”.
That would be a just decision that would give respect to the language and recognition to the history.
A nation wants to call its country in its own language —
and that should be allowed.
The name change is not a change of a letter — it is a recognition of the dignity of a nation.
I have submitted a petition to our President and Prime Minister raising this demand.
I hope that this legitimate request of the Malayalis will be considered at the earliest.
