ആദ്യത്തെ അല്മായവനിതാ പ്രീഫക്ട്|പരിശുദ്ധ സിംഹാസനത്തിന്റെ (Holy See) ഒരു ഡിക്കാസ്റ്ററിയുടെ പ്രീഫെക്ട് ആയി നിയമിതയാകുന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ സന്യാസിനിയല്ലാത്ത (non-religious) വനിതയാണ് അൽവരാഡോ.

നിലവിൽ EWTN ന്യൂസിന്റെ പ്രസിഡന്റും ചീഫ് ഓപ്പറേറ്റിംഗ് ഓഫീസറുമായ മരിയ മോണ്ട്സെററ്റ് അൽവരാഡോയെ (Maria Montserrat Alvarado) ലിയോ പതിനാലാമൻ പാപ്പ, ആശയവിനിമയത്തിനായുള്ള ഡിക്കാസ്റ്ററിയുടെ (Dicastery for Communication) പ്രീഫെക്ട് ആയി നിയമിച്ചു. 2026 നവംബർ 1 മുതൽ ഈ നിയമനത്തിന് പ്രാബല്യമുണ്ടാകും.
മെക്സിക്കോ സിറ്റിയിൽ ജനിച്ച അൽവരാഡോ ഫ്ലോറിഡ ഇന്റർനാഷണൽ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി, ജോർജ്ജ് വാഷിംഗ്ടൺ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഉന്നത വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടിയത്. 2009 മുതൽ 2023 വരെയുള്ള കാലയളവിൽ മതസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിനായുള്ള ബെക്കറ്റ് ഫണ്ടിൽ (Becket Fund for Religious Liberty) നേതൃസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ വഹിച്ച അവർ, മതസ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനും മനുഷ്യന്റെ അന്തസ്സ് ഉയർത്തിപ്പിടിക്കുന്നതിനുമായുള്ള വിവിധ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളിൽ സജീവമായിരുന്നു.
2023 മുതൽ, ഇറ്റേണൽ വേർഡ് ടെലിവിഷൻ നെറ്റ്വർക്കിന്റെ (EWTN) വാർത്താ വിഭാഗമായ EWTN ന്യൂസിന്റെ പ്രസിഡന്റായും ചീഫ് ഓപ്പറേറ്റിംഗ് ഓഫീസറായും അവർ സേവനമനുഷ്ഠിച്ചു വരുകയാണ്. ടെലിവിഷൻ, റേഡിയോ, പ്രിന്റ്, ഡിജിറ്റൽ, സോഷ്യൽ മീഡിയ എന്നിവയിലുടനീളം ഏഴ് ഭാഷകളിൽ ഉള്ളടക്കം നിർമ്മിക്കുന്ന അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര മാധ്യമ പ്ലാറ്റ്ഫോമുകളുടെ മേൽനോട്ടം ഇക്കാലയളവിൽ അവർ വഹിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
അൽവരാഡോയുടെ ഈ നിയമനത്തിലൂടെ, ഫ്രാൻസിസ് മാർപാപ്പ തുടക്കം കുറിച്ച റോമൻ ക്യൂരിയയുടെ (Roman Curia) പരിഷ്കരണത്തിന്റെയും നവീകരണത്തിന്റെയും പാത പോപ്പ് ലിയോ പതിനാലാമൻ മുന്നോട്ട് കൊണ്ടുപോവുകയാണ്. ആഗോള കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭയുടെ ശുശ്രൂഷയിൽ അല്മായർക്ക് നേതൃസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും ഉത്തരവാദിത്തങ്ങളും കൈമാറുന്നതാണ് ഈ നയം. പരിശുദ്ധ സിംഹാസനത്തിന്റെ (Holy See) ഒരു ഡിക്കാസ്റ്ററിയുടെ പ്രീഫെക്ട് ആയി നിയമിതയാകുന്ന ആദ്യത്തെ സന്യാസിനിയല്ലാത്ത (non-religious) വനിതയാണ് അൽവരാഡോ.
Pope Leo XIV has appointed Maria Montserrat Alvarado, currently President and Chief Operating Officer of EWTN News, as Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, effective from 1 November 2026.
Born in Mexico City, Alvarado earned academic degrees from Florida International University and George Washington University. From 2009 to 2023, she held leadership positions at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, serving in initiatives dedicated to the defense of religious freedom and the promotion of human dignity.
Since 2023, she has served as President and Chief Operating Officer of EWTN News, the news division of the Eternal Word Television Network, overseeing international media platforms producing content in seven languages across television, radio, print, digital, and social media.
With the appointment of Alvarado, Pope Leo XIV continues the path of reform and renewal of the Roman Curia initiated by Pope Francis, which has seen lay faithful, men and women, entrusted with positions of leadership and responsibility in the service of the universal Church. Alvarado is the first non-religious woman to be appointed prefect of a dicastery of the Holy See.
