കാക്കനാട്: പ്രമുഖ കാർഷിക ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും ഇന്ത്യൻ ഹരിത വിപ്ലവത്തിന്റെ പിതാവുമായ ഡോ. എം.എസ്. സ്വാമിനാഥൻ തലമുറകൾക്ക് വഴിക്കാട്ടിയ പ്രതിഭയെന്ന് സീറോമലബാർസഭയുടെ മേജർ ആർച്ച്ബിഷപ് കർദിനാൾ മാർ ജോർജ് ആലഞ്ചേരി. ഡോ. സ്വാമിനാഥന്റെ നിര്യാണത്തിൽ അനുശോചനമറിയിച്ച കർദിനാൾ ആലഞ്ചേരി അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കാഴ്ചപ്പാടുകൾ നാടിന്റെ സമഗ്രവികസനത്തിന് വഴിതെളിച്ചെന്നും രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ കാർഷിക വികസനത്തിനുവേണ്ടി അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ ജീവിതംതന്നെ സമർപ്പിച്ചുവെന്നും അനുസ്മരിച്ചു.
കേരളത്തിന്റെ കാർഷികപശ്ചാത്തലത്തിൽനിന്നും ആരംഭിച്ച ഡോ. സ്വാമിനാഥന്റെ ജീവിതയാത്ര അത്ഭുതകരമായ വഴികളിലൂടെയാണ് മുന്നോട്ടുപോയത്. ഇന്ത്യയിലും വിദേശത്തുമായി നേടിയ ഉന്നത വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിലൂടെ സ്വായത്തമാക്കിയ തന്റെ അറിവ് നമ്മുടെ രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ അഭിവൃദ്ധിക്കുവേണ്ടി അദ്ദേഹം വിനിയോഗിച്ചു.
പട്ടിണിയുടെ ഭീകരമുഖം നേരിട്ടുകണ്ട അദ്ദേഹം മനുഷ്യരുടെ വിശപ്പ് മാറ്റുന്നതിനുവേണ്ടി ക്രിയാത്മകമായ പദ്ധതികൾ ആവിഷ്‌കരിക്കുകയും അവ നടപ്പിലാക്കുന്നതിൽ നിർണായക പങ്കുവഹിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
നാടിന്റെ ഭക്ഷ്യസുരക്ഷ ഉറപ്പാക്കുന്നതിന് അദ്ദേഹം നടത്തിയ ഗവേഷണങ്ങളും വിഭാവനം ചെയ്ത പദ്ധതികളും പത്മശ്രീ, പത്മഭൂഷൻ, പത്മവിഭൂഷൻ തുടങ്ങിയ നിരവധി അവാർഡുകൾക്ക് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അർഹനാക്കി.
കുട്ടനാട്ടിലെ നെൽകൃഷിയുടെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിനുവേണ്ടി അദ്ദേഹം മുന്നോട്ടുവെച്ച പദ്ധതിയും ഏറെ ശ്രദ്ധേയമായിരുന്നു.
ഡോ. സ്വാമിനാഥനുമായുള്ള വ്യക്തിപരമായ ബന്ധം കർദിനാൾ അനുസ്മരിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ദർശനങ്ങളും കർമ്മധീരതയും സ്വായത്തമാക്കി രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ കാർഷിക പുരോഗതിക്കുവേണ്ടി സമർപ്പണം ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് ഡോ. സ്വാമിനാഥന് നൽകാവുന്ന ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ബഹുമതിയെന്ന് മാർ ആലഞ്ചേരി പ്രസ്താവിച്ചു.

Kakkanad: Cardinal George Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, extended his deepest condolences on the demise of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan. He said that Dr. Swaminathan was a visionary force behind India’s Green Revolution, transforming our nation from a food deficit to a food surplus country through his ground-breaking work in genetics and plant breeding.
The Cardinal said in his statement that the educational journey, spanning from the Catholic Little Flower High School in Kumbakonam to the Maharaja’s College in Trivandrum, and culminating in a Ph.D. from Cambridge, followed by post-doctoral training in the USA, equipped Dr. Swaminathan with an immense wealth of scientific knowledge and experience. Returning to India, he spearheaded the revolution in food production. Hailing from Alleppey, the rice bowl of Kerala, Dr Swaminathan conceived a visionary project for the development and sustainability of Kuttanad, where rice is cultivated below sea level. His development of high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice through the integration of chemical-biological technology revolutionized agricultural production in India. Dr Swaminathan ensured that our nation would never again face the specter of famine and that the vulnerable would not be left behind. This was the legacy of the Green Revolution.
India rightfully bestowed upon him prestigious awards including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, recognizing his extraordinary contributions to our nation’s food security. Additionally, he was honoured with the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, Magsaysay Award, Albert Einstein World Science Award and Indira Gandhi Prize.
Cardinal Alencherry cherished the memories of his conversation and interaction at a ceremony in Kottayam with Dr. Swaminathan. He invited everybody to redouble the determination to carry forward the ambitious goals Dr. Swaminathan set for our country. He concluded his statement expressing the hope that Dr. Swaminathan’s legacy will inspire the nation to reach new heights in the field of agriculture and food security.
